Cedric Erskine Bowell OW 1945-1947

This and the pictures were sent in by Alan Bowel the son of Cedric Bowel and he has this to say about his Dad.

My Dad's name was Cedric Erskine Bowell (yes really!).

He was born in Madras, India on 20th Octiber 1929 and passed away from cancer aged only 43 on 20th April 1973. He was on HMS Worcester from 1945 - 47(?) Following this he joined the Merchant Navy and finally was a Pilot on the Manchester Ship Canal up until his death.

My Dad came back from India in 1945 alone aged only 15 or 16 and was followed in 1947 by the rest of the family as partition began in India. The family settled in West Bromwich where they had other family. It was quite a shock to the system with all of them never having been back in England. Dad's

side of the family had a few generations in India. As luck would have it they moved in next door to my Mum's family and Mum and Dad married in 1953 (Dad's Best man, Mike Tonkin was also aboard Worcester). When Dad got his job with the canal they moved up to the Wirral and settled in Bromborough, having three children, Christine, Kathryn and myself the youngest, Alan.

My Dad's sister Maureen still lives in the midlands not far from me and recently gave me Dad's Cap badge which she had held for years (photo attached).

I do hope you and your members find the photos of interest.

Kind regards

Alan Bowell
